The world premiere for I Was There will be at the Philadelphia Independent Film Festival Friday May 6th. Further information can be found here.

This will be my second straight film working with director Kris Roselli after 2014's Common Grounds and my first film credit as Supervising Sound Editor/Sound Designer.

I must give a big shout out to my colleague John Creed for his excellent sound work on the film. It was great to collaborate together again for the first time since we were interns at Danetracks.

This was such a fun project to design the sound on. Kris was great for encouraging me to always try to take something that was good and push to make it even better.

The film will be making the festival circuit. I Was There has also been selected for the Hoboken Film Festival in June. I'm stoked for everyone who worked on the film and I hope lots of people get to check it out!
Lately I've been working on the sound design for I Was There. This is my second film collaborating with director Kris Roselli. After cutting sound effects on last year's Common Grounds, I'm supervising the sound editorial on this short film. Look for more updates here in the future, but for now check out IWT's teaser:

A Place In Hell is set to premiere on October 25th. IndustryWorks Pictures is handling worldwide distribution. I'm stoked for horror film fans to view it. You can read more about APIH's release over at Fangoria.
That's it for now. But if you want some other awesome stuff to read, dive into Asbjoern Andersen's interview with David Farmer. He's an amazing sound designer and the interview is full of great insights on creature sound design.
2014 is winding down and the past few months I've had the pleasure of working on the post sound for the independent feature A Place In Hell. Written and directed by David Boorboor, the film was shot in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, with the post sound completed in Oregon.

This was my second project working with supervising sound editor/sound designer Michael Gandsey. Films with horror elements are a bit of a playground for the effects editor! Both David and Michael gave me a lot of creative opportunities to add elements of tension and foreboding with sound effects and foley.

It was a great experience to collaborate with the entire post production team on this project! Check out the trailer below:
This summer I've been taking the opportunity when it presents itself to record the sounds of the many bridges within the city. Why? Who knows... Maybe an all-bridge recordings sound effects library is just what everyone needs? (If anyone would actually be interested in such a thing, let me know!)

Mostly though I've been doing it because I find it fun. Lots of neat recordings have come from it! Cars going across the steel grating of the Hawthorne bridge, the sound of the Max (public transit) rail car going by on the Steel bridge and shaking everything... It's surprising just how close up you can get to a bridge when it's being raised/lowered, and from lots of angles too!

I recently got away from the many bridges over the Willamette River and ventured across the Interstate (I-5) bridge over the Columbia River that separates Oregon and Washington.

On the Washington side I was able to get up close directly underneath the bridge. The rush of many cars going overhead makes for some unique sounds. Give it a listen:

Labor of Love is a fictional portrait of an adult film foley artist. The acting here is top notch, and for anyone who has worked with sound this hits home while remaining funny.

The interview series provides an opportunity to go a bit more in-depth, and in particular I want to highlight the episode with the guys from BOOM Library.

As a fan of BOOM's work, not only is it neat to find out the company's origins, but the interview touches upon things I'm always curious about like microphone selection and metadata management.

BOOM Library records/designs some outstanding sound effects, but don't just take my word for it. Here are a couple great reviews of some of BOOM's collections: Creatures and Cinematic Metal

One last thing... If you've yet to see the video below, it's one of the best tutorials around courtesy of BOOM's YouTube page. It breaks down in detail how they designed one of their whoosh-hits and is packed with useful workflow techniques.
The most recent Tonebenders podcast touched upon various audio books on the market. The podcast also features an interview with Ric Viers (skip ahead to the 12-minute mark), author of The Sound Effects Bible, an awesome book that I still have on my bookshelf. Give it a listen:

I know I'm always looking to learn new stuff: tips, tricks and techniques. So having resources to draw from such as these is great.

If you still want something interesting to read, but don't plan to go out and pick up one of the books recommend in the podcast, check out this essay from Benjamin Wright - Footsteps with character: the art and craft of Foley.mdichiricohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07716125980645156206noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3664737672773890311.post-74751592019820187702014-06-19T15:16:00.002-07:002014-06-19T15:16:59.772-07:00Shout-out to the great team at Dony & PonyWant to take a moment to congratulate John, Dave and everyone and Dog & Pony for their profile in Mix magazine.
He's one of the best in my opinion about sharing his knowledge with the world, which is sometimes rare for someone as talented as he is.

For the release of How to Train Your Dragon 2, Randy gave an excellent interview with NPR. If you have the time to visit my little blog, then it's definitely worth your time to give it a listen!
For anybody else who's fascinated by what Randy has to say, I highly recommend this Soundworks Collection video profile of Flight. It's one of the best Soundworks has done because Randy really takes the time to breakdown the sound design and the thought process behind it.mdichiricohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07716125980645156206noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3664737672773890311.post-35416428320130057442014-04-19T16:12:00.000-07:002015-07-02T22:12:46.807-07:00Common Grounds SFX

I recently wrapped up work on Common Grounds. Written and directed by Kris Roselli, this 35 minute short film focuses on two friends that come into contact with each other for the first time since a tragic childhood accident that defined both of their lives.

I was the sound effects editor on the film and I'd like to thank producer Tierney Boorboor for getting me involved on this project.

In addition to cutting a Russian roulette scene, one thing that stood out for me was getting to record/edit some Foley for the main character's notebook that is an important part of the story.

Re-recording mixer Michael 'Gonzo" Gandsey did an amazing job with the final mix and I'm hopeful that the film will be screened in Portland sometime this year.

For the time being, I'm stoked that the film will be premiering at the Philadelphia Independent Film Festival this June.
However, I recently had a fun field recording experience I wanted to share.

Some of the very first recordings I ever captured were from the hoop and key mics I'd set up at McArthur Court during Ducks basketball games. I've recently been covering Portland Timbers home games for CSNNW, and I wanted to capture some of the great crowds at Providence Park.

I left my Zoom H1 set up in the in the press box, positioned out of an open window and aimed across the field at the Timbers Army.
I did have some issues with other media people talking in the background during some of the better recordings, which is to be expected since I had the mic in a public place. What I'd like to attempt next is to position a shotgun mic at the Timbers army section from the press box, perhaps hanging out of the box.

Anyway, for not having a bunch of gear with me to position around the field, there were some nice surprises that came from the recordings. Although because of the almost constant drumming, even the good distant perspective cheering/booing reactions aren't practical to use on a project.

Here are a few of the recordings to check out:
I've been getting more familiar with its wide range of presets and using it to manipulate sound.

It's a bit difficult to describe what it does but it all makes sense when you hear it. The versatility is almost endless. Whatever sound you splice up can be pitched, reversed, delayed and filtered before being sent to the output.

I'd like to tell you I have some unique creative process to how I went about this, but basically I started out with importing a tonal hum sound effect into my session and began experimenting. As I processed the sound more it became apparent that I was going in the whoosh direction and kept on tweaking. Feel free to take a listen:

Maynes discusses the importance of Foley in elevating the overall sound design despite its lower standing in the post sound hierarchy. I couldn't agree more with his perspective, and Douglas Murray has a great point in the comments section that Foley adds the "detail and weight that are helpful for believability and to glue the sound effects together."

As an editor, I have spent a lot of my time focusing on Foley. I find it important to communicate with a client the need for Foley and as others have pointed out in the comments, Foley can be a great medium for character development and emotional elements.

It got me reminiscing about when I had the opportunity as an intern to check out Gary Hecker's work during the post production of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2. It was amazing how an experienced Foley artist and mixer can sync sounds for virtually anything. The dynamic between the Foley team and Foley Supervisor Chris Alba was very interesting to say the least. I could go on and on, but it'd be better to just check him out in action:

[Via press release from National Geographic Channel] "To help in bringing JFK's last day to life, the creative team behind JFK: The Final Hours restored an extraordinary color film, shot by a professional White House film crew that documented JFK's movements during his final day. By stripping off the original, now unusable audio, and converting the footage to high definition, this restored film is a haunting, immersive experience for viewers."

Before it airs I wanted to share a couple of my experiences on working with this restored footage and building the soundscape -

SFX & Research: Studying history at the University of Oregon finally paid off for me! In all seriousness though, it was important to maintain the accuracy as much as possible with the period of the documentary and that was true with the sound effects. As the Assistant Sound Editor, one of my tasks was to research what models Air Force One, the police officer's bikes and JFK's limousine were at the time so that we would work with appropriate material from our effects libraries.

Backgrounds: There were quite a lot of crowd BGs needed for this documentary. At many points JFK is being greeted by crowds at various airports or giving speeches to an audience. I was lucky that in my first week working on the project, the Portland Rose Festival was going on and I was able to go and record some great crowd ambiences to use.

Foley: I was having a conversation with Sound Designer David Hughes about wanting to try a technique that I heard about Lon Bender's team using on The Hunger Games for making the outside Foley more organic. David was all for it and we put some quicktime clips onto an iPad to perform clapping and various other Foley elements in sync with the picture. It saved a ton of time by just having to nudge these recordings a bit instead of editing individual things in. In particular I liked the clapping, it really added some great material to play along with the wild clapping in the BGs.

That's it for now, but I'll see about updating the blog further after the documentary airs. Overall, it was an absolute pleasure to work with everyone involved on this project!mdichiricohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07716125980645156206noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3664737672773890311.post-6147462677715239562013-06-24T15:24:00.000-07:002014-09-02T15:34:36.324-07:00PT11 First ImpressionsI've been on a bit of a hiatus from blogging the last couple months. I recently moved and I'm very stoked to be back in Oregon.

So the big recent news is that Avid has released Pro Tools 11:

The first thing I did was dive into the system requirements and make sure that everything was compatible.

There are definitely some cool new features in this version (Of course some of which have been available for quite some time in other DAWs). I particularly like the new video engine. Hopefully no more transcoding videos!

One concern for me and a lot of others is making sure that all plug-ins, interfaces and peripherals would be supported. Having to wait for plug-in developers to port their plug-ins to the 64-bit AAX format is a big inconvenience at the moment. But I'm confident that this issue will be corrected in time.

Perhaps the biggest thing for me in holding off from upgrading right away is the ongoing documented issues with the iLok License Manager software. I know that at some point I'll upgrade to PT11, but being deep in the middle of a project is simply not a good time to be updating. My setup does everything that I need at the moment for my workflow. For the time being I'm good with that!

Lastly, Ceri Thomas has a great blog post about what PT11 does for post. Recommended reading.

I recently wrapped up work on Utah, a documentary short from director Kate Brown.

The aesthetic of the documentary involved all the audio being recorded on DAT tapes by Kate in Utah over multiple visits. We had many hours of recordings to master and creatively cut to the locked picture edit. Ultimately, we were able to comprise the entire soundtrack from the director's recordings. The documentary was mixed for both 16mm optical film and digital formats.

It was great to contribute on such an interesting project. Many thanks to Kate and the other collaborators, Felix Lau and John Creed for their hours of mastering/editing work and re-recording mixer Matt Kielkopf for making it sound great. I'll update the blog with more information about where the film will be screening at in the future.mdichiricohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07716125980645156206noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3664737672773890311.post-13304729982362045662013-04-23T19:43:00.001-07:002015-10-08T16:35:45.738-07:00"Sound is often subtle"Just a few thoughts...

I've been reflecting upon my time in Los Angeles, and without a doubt it was a career affirming experience to have initially came out to intern at Danetracks.

I'm listening to The Matrix Reloaded playing on television as I write this post. I've always felt that the first Matrix film and Jurassic Park were influential on me wanting to get into audio post production and sound design.

Quick tangent -

I had the opportunity in 2011 to listen to Craig Berkey speak. Berkey used an example of horses from True Grit to discuss his take on editing. He explained that although sync is important, it’s sometimes equally as effective to concentrate on the “feeling” of the image rather than the cuts.

The concept of feeling being equally as important as sync is something that has really stuck with me.

I always enjoyed being the last person left at Danetracks at night talking with Dane about ideas such as feeling in sound design. Seeing Dane take a concept and hear what he created from things I got to assist in recording was inspirational.

I truly can't express my gratitude to Dane, Francine and the rest of the great people I met through Danetracks for sharing their perspectives on the industry and passing along honest advice.

Alright that's enough rambling from me for now. Here is an absolute must read interview in Mix Magazine with Dane, Eric and several others from Danetracks who worked on The Matrix trilogy.mdichiricohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07716125980645156206noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3664737672773890311.post-16681558656601920962013-03-19T18:30:00.000-07:002013-03-20T13:39:34.741-07:00Command|8Recently I was able to score a Command 8 from a friend of mine. Secondhand audio gear can always be a little scary, but it sure helps to know who you're getting it from as opposed to someone off the internet.

I've previously worked with the MC Pro and Nuendo, and I was eager to finally have a control surface to add to my Pro Tools workflow at home.

Having an interface and control surface together like a 003 is not a huge necessity for me at my home workstation. I very rarely if ever record anything directly into my DAW. Most of what I record I do with my Zoom, and I have the option to dust off my Mbox if I need to input directly into PT.

While I'm fine working with a mouse and keyboard, the capabilities you get with a control surface have definitely increased the speed and efficiency of how I edit. I love being able to do more detailed volume automation, and I also really enjoy having my plug-in controls on a surface. The thing is, I'm truly not even using the the Command 8 to it's full capabilities. Sound on Sound has a cool article with some functions and features I won't even begin to detail.

It can sometimes be an issue for me deciding what do I really need vs want. When it comes to a microphone, or plug-in and so forth, there is a lot of research that goes into getting what will benefit your own individual workflow. Overall, I'm so stoked with the Command 8.

That is until I eventually own the Artist Series!mdichiricohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07716125980645156206noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3664737672773890311.post-11380798463858739082013-02-03T20:37:00.000-08:002015-07-02T22:31:26.440-07:00Mahna MahnaSo it appears that I haven't been doing a very good job of keeping the blog updated.
Outside of work, the more I've been diving into iZotope Iris the more I've fallen in love. It's amazing the unique sounds you can create. I've been having a blast losing track of time with it. It's the most fun I can remember having since I first started using NI Kontakt. 4 out of 5 times when I import sounds into it thinking nothing more than 'this could be cool' I don't end up with anything much, but that 1 time when I do it's awesome! Perhaps the biggest challenge with Iris is coming up with descriptions and tags for the crazy sounds. I honestly don't think I'd turn to it if I was for example under a deadline for a revision, but I'm hopeful someday I'll be involved on a project where I'll get to use some sounds from my Iris folder. If you haven't yet, I absolutely recommend demoing it.mdichiricohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07716125980645156206noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3664737672773890311.post-75001715788158822622012-11-23T07:30:00.000-08:002013-08-04T16:18:24.674-07:00Mastering

Mastering sound effects is an essential task for me. Not only does it allow me to keep adding custom material to my library, but it builds discipline during slow periods between projects. I like to think of it like an old kung fu film- You want to become a master, you must master every day!mdichiricohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07716125980645156206noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3664737672773890311.post-20056640542756561862012-10-10T10:07:00.000-07:002013-05-30T12:15:23.628-07:00Gopher Voice Sound DesignGo Go Greta has been released, pick up the app here. Congrats to everyone involved in the development!

A fun character in the story is Greta's gopher sidekick. One of my tasks in designing the soundscape was to give the gopher a voice.

To achieve this I recorded myself doing my best Caddyshack gopher impression. With a little processing, I manipulated my voice into something that the development team liked and from there I made variations for different situations.

Here are a few samples of the gopher voice I created:
If only there was one DAW to rule them all!

Wanted to quickly share a few links that I find to be really useful.

This is an awesome interactive site for PT10 shortcuts.

This Sound on Sound article from a few years back goes into some of the more obscure shortcuts and has a good step by step guide for creating your own Mac shortcuts for Pro Tools.

A shortcut that I've found to be good to create is one to open the I/O...

The second SOS article dives into setting up custom macros. If you use a ShuttlePRO, one of the many cool things about it is you can assign macro commands to a single button.

Please let me know if there are any other sites out there that you find helpful.mdichiricohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07716125980645156206noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3664737672773890311.post-72911476308782460362012-08-31T08:03:00.000-07:002015-07-02T22:43:41.460-07:00New OpportunitiesLittle bit of news in my life right now... Soon I'll be moving from Las Vegas to Los Angeles.

Of course change sometimes can be a bit bittersweet... I really can't express how awesome everyone at Dog and Pony is. It's been such a pleasure to work along side the DnP team and I could never thank John McClain enough for giving me the opportunity to contribute on so many great projects. I've had lots of fun times at the studio and I wish the best for everyone there.

I'm determined to make the most of this new opportunity and achieve the goals that I have for myself. It's all about perseverance!

And now... how about a little sound design inspiration?
